Yarn Festival/event in our region..... how lucky are we?!

Last year saw the first 'Fibre East' festival held in Bedford and it's success has enabled it to run again this summer. Check out the website for more details by clicking on the link. The event is held on a large working farm and offers ample free parking for all. It is held on sunday 15th and monday 16th July 2012, opening times are 10am, tickets are available on the gate at £6 per person or pre bookable for slightly less. Food and drink available onsite too. A great local day out of inspiration to our hobbies.

This shawl made by Anna T is a Veera Välimäki design called 'Different lines'. (purchasable pattern within Ravelry). It's an asymmetric shawl made with short row shaping, lending itself incredibly well to the often understated garter stitch pattern. The shawl shown here is made using only one skein of Brooklyn handspun yarn in 'soft spun plus' colour way 'grey' (available here from Socktopus) and one skein also of 'Nimu Torva' yarn in purple colour way (available from this site)

Caronne made these lovely shawls. She's becoming abit of a shawl'ster I'd say as has made many recently. This purple-blend one is called 'Revontuli' by AnneM and is a free pattern available to download on Ravelry.com. You'll see that so far more than 2,500 people have made it up in various yarns and published lots of photos to look at. Caronnes version is knitted up in KingCole Riot DK yarn and used only just over a skein of it. Next you'll see she's also made this thunderous shawl also a free download on ravelry called Dew Drops Shawl by Bex Hopkins, Caronne used the same Kincole Riot yarn in a thunder grey mixture colourway. Both stunning, well done.

Rachel has made this luxurious lace and mohair feminine sweater called 'Dream Ticket'. The pattern was in the magazine called 'KNITTING' in May 2007 (Edition 037) but is also available in the pattern book by Sublime titled 'The Very Gorgeous Sublime Kid Mohair Book'. It's knitted up here in the suggested yarn 'Sublime Kid Mohair Blend' in shade 'Mauve'.

Rachel says it's really quite easy to knit up once you've done the initial four rows.

New knitter Louise's first 2 weeks knitting

Wow. On Louise's first visit to our group she learnt how to cast on, knit and started the pot holder in blue which she soon finished in few days and put a hood on it for use in her kitchen, then she learnt the purl stitch and knocked out these blue fingerless mitts, THEN (yes more!)... she was shown the basket weave stitch and made a bright pink pair. Whatever will the next fortnight bring knit-wise for Louise? I cannot wait to see.

Many modern knitters may be familiar with this fun scarf design available for free to download from Knitty.com and after being inspired by another group member who made it, I thought I'd make one too. I used about 5metres short of 2 entire skeins of Colinette Jitterbug yarn in 'Lagoon'. I used 5mm straight needles. The pattern was easy, fast and much fun. When finished I dampened it and hung it out wide on the line to dry. Cannot wait to wear it! I love it and will certainly make another one in pinks/oranges, just like the one the designer made as seen on knitty website.

The end result makes an almost sheer like fabric. The project took me just under a month from start to finish.

Well after visiting KnitNation at Londons Kensington this year, I was inspired by two main areas; 1.) Ysolda's stall - the designer of said 'Ishbel' and also of 'Loop' stall - great london knit shop. The lady of Loop had made the ishbel in a lovely fine yarn so it was very small and more suited to a scarf than a shawl. So I bought suggested yarn :-laceweight superfine merino. Knitted up the ishbel in less than a week and then bought some Punta Mericash yarn to knit another one for my friends 40th birthday, yarn was delayed so I had a mere 4 days to make it! Done it and have smouldering needles to tell the tale! ;-) Here's pictures of both, my one is the pinkiest one and hers is the coralish one.

This pattern is free and called Camilla flower petal shawl and is available from Elann.com I did mine in a thicker yarn than suggested as wanted a warmer version for the colder months, so opted for Rowan Tapestry yarn in 'whirlpool'/blue and size 5mm cicular needles. the shawl is fast to knit up and very easy and the peaked edgings are worked individually at the end.

Annette made this cute & colourful little fair isle bag after not having worked any fair isle for 20 years or more so thought it would be fun to do a small project, and agrees it was!

The bag was embellished with a little flower and leaves and is intended as a Christmas gift for a friend in America.

The pattern was called Fair Isle Bag! - from Simply Knitting, with 4 designs to choose from. Annette used the free bamboo handles that came with the magazine. Yarn used = Sirdar Country Style DK, of which she had plenty of colours already to choose from.

Finally she lined it with some floral fabric I had in my stash for patchwork, so it didn't cost her a thing, even the circular needle was a free gift in a magazine!

My first ever socks

I knitted these socks for my son for use over normal socks in wellington boots. When faced with a selection of multi-coloured yarns to choose his socks from he opted for these mad brights! That's children for you. He loves them and they work just aswell for around the house socks and never cease to be a 'talking point' when seen by the public. I'd like to master socks and enjoy making more but making this pair using 4 dpn's felt abit like combining a 'French-knitting-doll' with the old fashioned board game 'Kerplunk'!

See the original picture here that inspired me to copy this design. It's a cath kidston stripey crochet throw made in 100% acrylic I saw 2yrs ago on her website. Mine is made in same crochet stitch (half-trebble) and with same colour sequence but 100% cotton which I beleive feels much softer and luxurious. I'm very pleased with the end result as well as the shell shaped edgings taught to me by another ktog member. My greens are considerably brighter than that in the original design but I think it's all the more cheerful for it! ;-) I now look forward to enjoying many years use from this. It's been aptly renamed 'The Magic Blanket' in our house as offers a boost when anyone feels poorly or run down!

Baldock's K.I.P 2009

We were very lucky with the weather today when we had our Knit In Public event on the lawn outside Zeus in Baldocks town. It was a blissful 2hrs of knitting and chatting with such wonderful company. Giant knitting!

Keren bought these huge needles and yarn at the Knitting show at Alexandra Palace last week. The needles are 60mm round and heavy! The yarn is strips of blanket edgings and when knitted across a mere 40 stitches - makes for a quick home made rug thats both strong and comfy. Definitley the biggest knitting needles I've ever held.

Basic Winter Warmers

I have made these for my sons first winter in school. They're basic patterns so I opted for sumptously soft yarns for snuggle factor when that wind gets blustery.
Thinking about how small children easily loose a scarf when its merely draped around them, I knitted in a 'hole' / giant button hole - and then picked up and re-inforced it in green strong wool for couple of rows; the extra bonus being its easy for him to see the big colourful gap to thread the scarf through. Hurrah, means hopefully no trodden on cashmere mix scarf on playground!
The hat has large fixed button either side to hold up the cosy thick ribbed edge. Hat made in ever so soft Sirdar Denim aran Sport. Both patterns made up. Scarves and hats are so very quick to make, great first time projects.

This morning I could have hugged the Posty! He delivered my order to me, being, a skein of Hand Maiden CamelSpin (30% camel & 70% silk) and let me tell you, it is droolingly, sumptuously soft to touch!!! I opted for colour shade 'Lilypond' in which the colours and varied shades within are seemingly endless. Pricey yarn at £23.50 a skein but since only need one to make a simple lacey shawl it's more than justified. Purchased from 'Soctopus' online and very impressed at the service and personal touch, not to mention the gorgeous pink and cream tissue paper it was perfectly wrapped in. I'm quite sure, yarn doesn't get better than this...

I've made this moss stitch tank top {'Marcus' - Slipover} from the new Rowan 'milk cotton book' and used their yarn which is made from part milk protein and part cotton; it has been lovely to knit with, smooth and almost waxy in feel. Washes up super and retains its shape. I particularly love moss stitch as its reversible (perfect for food/drink mess after restaurant trips, just whip it off and turn it inside out! tadaaah = clean smart boy!) I'd definitley make another one.

I fell in love with Cath Kidston's Stripey throw on her website a while ago but didn't want to pay the high price for what is 100% acrylic, so... I'm making my own, inspired by her colour sequence (except a brighter green) and opting for 'half-trebble' crochet stitch. It's now finished & a good size,I've woven in all those ends & am currently 80% through making the bright green scalloped edging like the Cath Kidston one. I'm using Rowan Handknit Cotton & a 6mm hook. I'M LOVING THE BLANKET!!!!

I made this cabled floor cushion from Debbie Bliss 'Simple Living' book, using Merino Aran yarn in a pale gold shade. When stretched it will measure about 3/4metre squared and be backed with this Mulberry 'Pear' design fabric. A doddle and fast to knit up. Just have to sew it up now. ;-(

This is the Cherry Blossom bag designed by Noni and made by karen. Knitted in Cascade 220 yarn, double stranded. Karen chose some funky bamboo round handles to fit. The bag closes with a magnetic clasp.

How can I merely call this beautiful piece of work a 'cardigan'? well, I use the term loosely of course because this garment is an incredibly beautiful example of a journey of confidence, colour and flare! It works perfectly and it's just divine to touch, no row is like another. If this were mine I would wear it everyday and travel everywhere giving each human being the opportunity to purr and drool at the pure demonstration of skill and style I wore. What's more: its unique and therefore priceless in more ways than one. The zoomed in image is a close up bit of one sleeve, I especially adore the carefully threaded ribbon through the purple part half way down towards the cuff. What patience Sue must have to make this whole garment.

Charlie has made this stunning Hemlock ring blanket . It's perfectly soft and drapey and can be worn in a multitude of ways; my favourite being folded in half and draped over the shoulders. Some of us at the pic-knit we did at Wimpole Hall Parkland in Cambridgeshire today. Never again will I disbeleive people who say you can sun burn in the shade! If I were speaking booze-ometre then I'd say my face is a deep ruby Merlot! hohum... Thank you everybody for coming and making it fun, interesting and a hoot. Thanks also to the lovely lady painter/artist who stopped by to meet us, good luck with your big move to Saudi, we LOVED meeting you.

My SECOND Rowan Cape...

You'll see from earlier post on here that I made the 'Montrose' cape from the Rowan Tweed book; (see picture far left taken from the pattern book) well I made a second one in a different colour (brown with fleck) as a gift to my fabulous sister-in-law for her recent special birthday. Couple months on, I'm strangley drawn to the idea of making a THIRD!

I adore this crotche'd bag Caronne has made. Its covered with balls that are cleverly crotche'd into the main part of the bag. It has also been lined with the most divine fabric that picks up almost every colour in the yarn. Yarn looks very Noro but in fact is from stall on Market in Biggleswade its called James C. Brett Marble Chunky 100% acrylic.

I have 'loved' making this cape. It took approx 4 months. Particularly like the varied angles of the stocking stitch as helps give the garment more interest and a better drape. Used RYC wool tweed in 'Reed' (green with multi fleck) pattern from Rowan Classic Tweed book.
Hard to get a great photo of the completed cape so pinched one from the book as well as my own picture.

Judi made this wonderfully soft and stretchy sweater in a self patterning luxurious silk yarn (Mobair by Victoria Smedley, Baby Alpaca and Silk) the colours in it conjures up images of cosy fires with candles, lamps and glasses of red wine as it has all the warm tones of Autumn. It's impossible to experience the sheer softness of this drapey yarn in a photo but it's sure to be a joy to wear.
